Using a split screen has several benefits and can increase productivity and outcomes for both students and teachers. As a teacher, how great would it be to have your presentation and a view of your students at the same time? For students, this is almost essential during collaborative work. Being able to see their classmates and the work at the same time will not only improve communication, but efficiency. Students may also find the split screen helpful as they take notes during a lesson, or while doing an assignment that requires them to refer to (or compare/contrast) something such as a reading passage, table, or graph.

Below you will find the instructions on how to do split screen on both a Chromebook and iPad.

Split screen on the Chromebook

Step 1. Open up your browser.

Step 2. Click “Alt” and the “[” button at the same time.

Step 3. Click the “+” symbol to add a second tab and drag it out to the open side of the screen.

The following Chrome extensions allow you to select the exact grid layout that works for you. With Tab Resize and Split Tabs, you can use one of their pre-made templates or create a custom one. The Split Screen extension in particular allows you to view two websites side by side and to split the screen vertically or horizontally. You can also use a notepad feature that will save your writing and launch the next time you use the extension.

Note that all of these extensions are available on any device where you’re using Google Chrome; they’re not limited just to the Chromebook.

Split screen on the iPad

You can also take advantage of a split screen set-up on your iPad — just follow these simple steps below.

• While using an app, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause to reveal the Dock.
• Touch and hold an app in the Dock, drag it to the right or left edge of the screen, then lift your finger.
• If two items are already open in Split View, drag over the item you want to replace. To give both views equal space, drag the divider to the center of the screen.
