Did you know that fan favorite Flipgrid is now Flip? If you aren’t already using Flip, now is the perfect time to get started! This free video discussion platform might have a new name and look, but it has the same great features (and some new ones too)!

One of my top reasons for integrating Flip into my lessons is because it mimics many of the concepts of social media that students know and love. They get to interact with one another, share their thoughts and feelings on a “public” forum, and express themselves creatively, all while in the safe, inclusive space that is Flip! Let’s dive into this amazing tool and see how we can get social with the new Flip.

What’s it all about? 

Flip is a tool you can use to record and share ideas, videos, and responses. Flip users can work in safe, small groups to share short videos, build community, and learn together. The overall goal is to make learning fun, fulfilling, and empowering for everyone. Flip’s motto is “Share. Discover. Be You.” and that is exactly what students, teachers, parents, and more can accomplish as they begin creating their own videos. The platform is free to use and can be accessed from any internet-connected device with an attached camera. The video component is what allows for Flip users to build meaningful relationships, practice digital citizenship, and collaborate with one another.

How do I begin?

Flip has made the process of getting started quick and user-friendly. To get started as an educator, all you need to do is sign up/login with a Google or Microsoft account.

For students/participants, all you need to do is follow a posted link or enter a Join Code to head right over to the posted topic.

Now that we are all connected, we are ready to communicate with one another, respond to topics, and share ideas!

Start collaborating

One of my favorite components of Flip is that it can be used across grade levels, subject areas, and even outside of the classroom. With the new updates, Flip has emphasized that it is an excellent resource for people to collaborate in a meaningful way. Individuals using Flip can still be creative and connect with one another, but now in a safe space without the pressure of social media.

After creating accounts and logging in, it’s time to start creating groups and topics.

1. Create a group: Now you can choose from different group templates to go from the classroom and beyond.

2. Once you have created your group, determine an idea for a topic and start creating. Remember that topics can be anything from reporting on current events to physical education demonstrations! I recommend checking out the “Discovery” tab to view pre-made topics that you can use in your groups, or accessing the “GridPals” tab to connect with fellow Flip educators and classrooms around the world.
3. Add a title and prompt students with a question.
4. Add media (image, video, Bitmoji, GIF, stickers, etc.) to engage students.
5. Make adjustments to the settings on the topic.

Watch creativity soar

Now that you have started creating your topics, you are ready to see the power of Flip. When first using Flip, have conversations about “on camera” best practices and tips for helping users feel comfortable speaking in front of a camera. Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Set up a clear background that is free of distractions.
2. Wear clothing that is professional, yet comfortable.
3. Use appropriate language that you would also use in the classroom.
4. Try out new Flip strategies – add text, choose from new backdrops, practice editing your videos in different ways, add photos/videos, use the drawing feature, use GIFs and stickers (there’s even a whole section with ASL stickers!), utilize sticky notes, record your screen, and so much more!
5. Be yourself and enjoy what you are creating!

All of these strategies will help users feel comfortable and confident with the social aspect of Flip, making use of all that Flip has to offer!
